Quality Structural Insulated Panels (SIP's)

A SIP home is an airtight envelope, which reduces energy costs and sound transmission with little waste. Most stick built home plans can be turned into a SIP home. Structural Insulated Panel Home 1

SIP's are one of the building products of the future. Structural Insulated Panels (SIP's) are framing materials made by sandwiching expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) insulation between two pieces of engineered wood (OSB) that are in turn made of small pieces of wood compressed together. Of all the foams, expanded polystyrene is the least toxic to the environment. It uses steam or pentane to expand the foam pellets rather than gases that eat the ozone, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) or hydrofluorocarbons (HCFC's).

Why are SIPs Green?

SIP's are energy efficient because they have little wood that spans from the inside of the structure to the outside, a feature known as thermal bridging. Without this unwanted transfer of heat through the wall, the SIP's create a structure that is better insulated and therefore more affordable to heat and cool than a conventional framing. Making your home more efficient is one of the best investments you can make. Building to the highest standards now will insure that your comfort will be affordable in the future.

South Dakota recommended R-Values: SIP's R-Values
Attic = R-48 Roof = R-48 (12" Thick)
Walls = R-18 Wall = R-24 (6" Thick)
Floors = R-25 Floor = R-32 (8" Thick)
